Fund-Raising Policy-2000-2001

The growth and success of the WSHS Crew Club depends greatly on the success of its fundraisers.  Fund-raisers are necessary to supplement dues in order to meet yearly expenses inherent to the operation of crew activities.  Any funds raised beyond budgeted expenses provide the means to purchase new or replacement equipment.  To accomplish this, full participation of all the rowers and their parents is necessary.  In order to purchase new equipment for the year, funds must be available in the fall to insure delivery of equipment for use in spring events.

For the returning rowers, $550 must be raised during the crew season (school year).  $250 of fund-raising is mandatory prior to December 31, 2000.  1st year rowers must raise $250 and are encouraged to do more.  Extra funds will allow us to purchase new equipment sooner without having to raise team dues.  Parents participating in fund-raisers will receive credit for their family crewmembers.  Dollars raised in group events will be equally divided among participating members based on the individuals time contribution.

In order to provide ample opportunities to achieve minimum fund-raising requirements and the possibility of purchasing much needed new equipment for this year, fall fund-raiser events and minimum requirements for participation credit are listed below.

Grocery/Department Store/Restaurant Certificates

Sale/purchase of grocery certificates earns 5% of the total purchased.  This is the simplest and easiest way for our Club to raise the needed funds.  For more information contact Melissa Wangsgard at 644-2683 or any member of the Ways & Means Committee.

Pizza Sales

Three more Pizza sales will be held during the year occurring once a quarter. The next one is scheduled for October.  Profit for the Club (and rower fund-raising credit) is $5.00 per kit and it requires no financial risk to the Club.  Credit for this activity is determined by the number of kits sold multiplied by $5 (example: 10 kits = $50).  For more information contact Judy Neary at 866-7793.

Tentative Dates: October, January, March and June.

Car Wash

There will be car washes held in the spring with dates and locations to be announced at a later time. If there is inclement weather, the car wash will be cancelled.  There will be a morning and afternoon shift (a shift equals 4 hours of work).  Dollars earned will be equally divided among the participants based on the number of hours worked.  For more information contact Betsy Coles at 569-6459.

Poinsettia Sales

A great success every year.  Beautiful plants will be available at a reasonable price in early November.  For more information contact Nancy Crochet 912-9005 or Lynn Martin 440-0028.

Restaurant Raffle

In April (at our General Meeting), we will be raffling off a number of Grand Prizes consisting of a series of free dinners at local Northern Virginia restaurants.  If you know any restaurateur who would be willing to donate complimentary dinners, please let us know.  Tickets will be priced at $5.00 each.  Minimum requirement: each rower is required to sell 10 tickets.  Each ticket sold equals $5.00 towards the rowers fund-raising requirements. For more information contact Claudia Fiebeg at 405-4906 or Chuck Geyer at 866-0160.

Phone Books

Weekends in January and February, plus the Monday and Tuesday of "Teacher Work Days".  It is mandatory for each rower to complete at least one shift.  We will need parents to drive and rowers to deliver the phone books. (A shift = 4 hours)  Dollar credits will be distributed based on the number of hours worked and the amount of money raised through the fundraiser.  Based on past years, 8 hours worked equals approximately $50.00 raised. For more information, contact Chuck Geyer at 866-0160.

Row-a-thon

This event is tentatively scheduled for Spring Break with Coaches' approval.  Pledge sheets must be turned in by that Monday.  Minimum requirement is for $50 raised from sponsors for each rower. Special awards will be given to the rower with the most money pledged.

Corporate Sponsorships

We are looking for local businesses (and not local too!) who might be interested in becoming a West Springfield HS Crew Club Sponsor.  The funds collected from this type of fund-raising would automatically be deposited in our escrow account for new equipment for the club.  We are looking for volunteers to develop and promote this long-term fund-raising effort. Rowers will earn a percentage of the money raised from a sponsor if they are instrumental in developing the contact. Contact Chuck Geyer at 866-0160 if you want to help.

United Way and Combined Federal Campaign

If you are participating with either of these campaigns, you can designate that your contribution be earmarked for the Booster Club.  Our identification number is #7802, West Springfield HS Crew Booster Club.

Possible other fund-raisers and sources for credits

Leaf Raking, ISA Sculling Championship concessions, McDonalds Night, cookie sales etc.

Ideas for fund-raisers are welcome.  Financially successful fund-raisers will result in fewer fund-raising requirements.  Contact any member of the Ways & Means Committee with suggestions.

If you are unable to fulfill these fund-raiser requirements, you will be billed your shortages on January 1st (for returning rowers) and April 15th (for all rowers) for all dollar shortages you have in your fundraising account.
